Founded in 2001 by Paul Barth, PhD, and Randy Bean, NewVantage is a partnership of business and technology executives, industry advisors, and subject experts. The core team is augmented by an extended knowledge network of subject-matter experts.

Managing Partners

Paul Barth, PhD, Managing Partner/Founder

Paul Barth co-founded NewVantage Partners in 2001. Paul brings decades of experience as a consultant to the nation's largest companies. He is a recognized thought-leader and practitioner in leveraging information as a strategic asset and in emerging approaches and best practices in data management. Dr. Barth was founder and CTO of Tessera Enterprise Systems, a nationally-known systems integration firm formed in 1995. He became CTO of iXL Enterprises, a leading international Internet integration firm, following the merger of Tessera/iXL in December 1999. He holds a PhD in computer science from MIT, and a MS from Yale University. Paul was formerly vice president of technology at Epsilon Data Management (an American Express company), and held senior technology positions at Thinking Machines and Schlumberger.

Randy Bean, Managing Partner/Founder

Randy Bean co-founded NewVantage Partners in 2001. Randy brings decades of experience as a line-of-business executive and general manager, a strategic planning and IT professional, and leader of marketing and business development functions. Randy was senior vice president and general manager with Harte-Hanks Data Technologies, and member of the leadership team which grew the firm from $9M to $150M during a 10-year tenure. He was a founder and vice president of market development for Wheelhouse Corporation, and held IT and strategic planning positions during 8 years with Bank of Boston. He holds a BA from Washington University in St. Louis, attended executive programs at Amos Tuck/Dartmouth and Darden/University of Virginia, and has lectured at Tuck.

Lynda Applegate

Lynda Applegate is the Martin Marshall Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, teaching courses in entrepreneurial management, and technology and innovation. Lynda is Chair of the HBS Entrepreneurial Management Unit, and is an internationally recognized expert and author on business and technology innovation. Her most recent articles include “Exploiting Disruption to Jumpstart Innovation”. Lynda has served on numerous commissions and blue-ribbon panels, and is the recipient of the Robert F. Greenhill and Berol Awards for innovation in research and teaching.

Tom Davenport

Tom Davenport is visiting professor at Harvard Business School and the President’s Distinguished Professor of Information Technology and Management at Babson College. Tom has also taught at the University of Chicago, Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business, and the University of Texas at Austin. He has written, co-authored or edited twelve books, including the best-seller Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning. He holds an MA and PhD from Harvard University, and was ranked the third most influential business and technology analyst in the world. He is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review.

John Fiore

John Fiore is Enterprise CIO and Executive Vice President for Mellon Bank of New York. He previously served as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Executive Vice President for State Street Corporation during a ten-year tenure, and was a Partner and Director with Coopers & Lybrand. John was recognized by CIO Magazine in the 1999, 2000, and 2002 "CIO 100".

Harvey Koeppel

Harvey Koeppel is Executive Director of the Center for CIO Leadership, a collaboration of IBM and leading academic organizations. He previously served as Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the Global Consumer Group for CitiGroup from May 2004 through June 2007, and as a consultant led the integration of acquisitions including Travelers Insurance for CitiGroup, and projects for JP Morgan Chase.

Steve Sheinheit

Steve Sheinheit was recently named Chief Strategy and Technology Officer for QBE Insurance Group. Steve was previously Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for MetLife. Prior to joining MetLife, Steve held the position of Executive Vice President and Corporate CIO for Chase Manhattan Bank. He is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program and holds an MBA in operations research from Baruch College and a BS in computer science from City College of NY.

Mel Taub

Mel Taub was Corporate Technology Officer (CTO) for CitiGroup, where he chaired the CitiGroup Information Technology Leadership Council, until his retirement. Mel was previously Chief Information Officer (CIO) for CitiGroup Global Corporate and Investment Bank, Senior Executive Vice President and CIO for Salomon Smith Barney, and held senior executive positions with Merrill Lynch, EF Hutton, and Shearson Lehman during his career on Wall Street. He currently advises the FBI and National Counter-Terrorism Center on their technology strategies and initiatives. He holds an MS in Operations Research from New York University.

Blaise Heltai, PhD, General Partner and Executive Advisory Board Member

Blaise Heltai was former Executive Vice President/e-Business and Internet Strategy for Fleet/Bank of America, where he led the e-Catalyst online banking transformation during a ten-year tenure. Blaise was an early pioneer in online banking. He previously held executive positions at Bell Labs and was CEO of fileTRUST. Blaise is past president of the Massachusetts Innovation and Technology Exchange (MITX), and current chair of the Future Systems Advisory Panel for the Social Security Administration, and Member of the Future Information Strategies Center of the National Academies. He holds a PhD in Math from SUNY.

Bill Bain, PhD, General Partner/San Francisco Office Leader

Bill Bain leads NewVantage Partners San Francisco office. Bill brings extensive experience in business strategy and process redesign. He previously held the positions of chief operating office of eRealtor.com, chief technology officer at MedChannel and Sprockets.com, senior vice president and director of re-engineering at PaineWebber, vice president of technology strategic planning at Bankers Trust, and chief technology officer at American Express. He holds PhD, MS, and BS degrees from Yale University.

Paul Bergamo, General Partner/Practice Leader, Data Governance and Big Data

Paul Bergamo joined NewVantage Partners in 2006. Paul leads the firms practice in the areas of data governance, IT governance, and process architecture. He brings extensive experience in the health care and insurance arenas. Paul served as Chief Technology Officer for Liberty Mutual from 2000-2005. He was previously Chief Technology Officer for Aetna. Paul has been recognized by CIO Magazine as a Top 100 CTO. He is a frequent author and speaker on issues in data governance and IT effectiveness. Paul holds a BS from Penn State University.

Colin Blaney, General Partner/Practice Leader, Business Architecture

Colin Blaney is an experienced management consultant and leader in business architecture. Colin was previously vice president of business architecture for WellPoint, principal with Diamond Management and Technology Consultants, and senior consultant with Braun Consulting. He is a member of the Business Architecture Institute and holds a BSBA from Boston University School of Management and an MBA from the Kellog School of Management at Northwestern University.

Peter Kim, General Partner/Practice Leader, Customer Analytics and Business Intelligence

Peter Kim joined NewVantage Partners in 2005. Peter leads NewVantage Partners activities in the areas of business capabilities modeling, business architecture, and the subject areas of CRM, customer analytics, and business intelligence. Peter has previously led professional services practices in data management, CRM, and analytics for Wheelhouse, Harte-Hanks, Spotfire, and iMarket. Peter holds an MBA from Babson College and a BA from Boston University.

Tonny Wong, General Partner/Practice Leader, Business Strategy and Analysis

Tonny Wong brings extensive experience as a senior strategy consultant. Tonny served as SVP for marketing technology for Digitas, and also held positions as head of marketing solutions for Merkle, practice lead for business technology for Pittiglio, Rabin, Todd, and McGrath (PRTM), an international management consultancy, CTO at Zentropy Partners, chief solution architect for iXL, and director of strategic architecture for Verizon. Tonny holds a BS in Applied Mathematics from University of Technology (Delft, Netherlands), an MS in Computer Science from New York University, and an executive MBA from The Wharton School.

Data Science and Big Data Center

Mike Beckerle, Senior Analytics Consultant

Mike Beckerle is an expert in big data and high-performance database systems. He was previously Senior Technology Leader for Deloitte Managed Analytics practice, and CTO for Oco prior to its acquisition by Deloitte. Mike previously held senior architect positions with IBM and Ascential, and was CTO at Torrent Systems. He holds an MS in Computer Science from MIT.

Michael Howard, Senior Systems Architect

Michael Howard brings deep expertise in architecture and engineering. He was a founder and CTO of Interactive Workplace (acquired by Siebel), director of web technologies for Siebel, principal architect and director of engineering for Lotus (acquired by IBM), and held senior architecture and engineering positons at Ziff-Davis, Xerox Palo Alto Research Cener, and Microsoft. Michael holds BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT.

Rich Masi, Practice Lead, Digital Optimization and Advanced Analytics

Rich Masi brings 20+ years experience in the design and optimization of advanced analytic solutions. He previously was a principal for the CRM practice at Epiphany. As a consultant, Rich has designed and optimized marketing processes for clients including American Express, Bank of America, Wachovia Bank, TIAA-CREF, GEICO, SunTrust Bank, and CitiGroup, and non financial service clients including Disney, Warner Cable, Coke, and T-Mobile. Rich holds an MS in Statistics and Operations Research from NYU Stern School of Business and a BA from North Carolina State.

Barbara Nichols, Practice Lead, Meta Data

Barbara Nichols is a leading expert in meta data strategy and data and information architecture. She is founder of Metaview 360, a data management consulting firm, and previously held leadership positions at Ascential Software (IBM) and Digital Equipment. She holds a BS from the University of Michigan.

Kate Pugh, Practice Lead, Unstructured Data

Kate Pugh leads NewVantage Partners unstructured content practice. Kate has held executive positions with Fidelity Investments, Intel, and JP Morgan Chase, and has been a management consultant with Monitor Group, Mercer Consulting, and IBM Global Services. She has authored numerous articles and is a frequent industry speaker. Kate is currently a faculty member at Columbia University in the Information and Knowledge Strategy program. She holds an MBA from the MIT Sloan School and an MA from Williams College.

Jameson Toole, Lead Research Scientist, Big Data

Jameson Toole is a PhD candidate at MIT, and holds an MS degree from MIT and a BS from the University of Michigan. He has received numerous honors including a Xerox Fellowship, National Science Foundation Research Fellowship, and Phi Beta Kappa recognition. Jameson has published a number of studies and research presentations, and completed a research initiative at The Santa Fe Institute.

Bob Vecchione, Senior Database Engineer

Bob Vechionne is a senior RDBMS engineer and architect focused on the design, development, and implementation of complex information management and high performance computing systems. Bob has benchmarked solutions including Teradata, Oracle, Exadata, Greenplum, and Netezza. He holds a BS from the University of Massachusetts in Electric Engineering.

Senior Associates

Dennis Honan, Advisory Partner

Dennis Honan has worked extensively in executive leadership positions in business and technology in the retail industry. As General Manager with Sears and Sears Direct, Dennis guided the online organization from startup to world-class e-commerce leadership through an integrated "clicks and bricks" strategy. Following the Sears acquisition, he became COO at Lands' End, where his responsibilities included IT, direct marketing and their customer service organizations. Dennis brings extensive experience in integrated retail strategy, customer information and cross-channel strategy. Dennis is a graduate of Canisius College.

Brian Gasser, Senior Consultant

Brian Gasser is a leading expert in leveraging information to create business value. Brian was formerly executive director for data warehousing for Morgan Stanley, where he was responsible for central data services for over a decade. His purview spanned enterprise data warehousing, reporting/analytics, platform engineering, data architecture/modeling, metadata management, and data operations. Brian was previously a consultant with Grant Thornton. He holds a BS in Computer Science from The University of San Francisco.

Julie Neu Senior Consultant

Julie Neu brings a strong background in business and technology applications. She formerly held leadership positions in the Internet strategy organizations at Fleet Financial and Wells Fargo Bank. Julie holds a Masters degree from Harvard University and a BA from the University of Virginia.

Alex Sheyner Senior Consultant

Alex Sheyner is senior architect and advisor to NewVantage Partners, and has led multiple client engagements. Alex was previously senior vice president of enterprise information architecture at WellPoint, principal at Diamond Management and Technology Consultants, and chief architect at Wheelhouse. He also serves as a consulting partner with McKinsey and Company. Alex holds a BSEE from Northeastern University.

Lisa Wentworth Senior Consultant

Lisa Wentworth has 20 years of experience in operational, financial and strategic roles in financial services – most recently working as General Manager, Global Internet Strategy for FleetBoston Financial. Before her banking career Lisa worked at Arthur Andersen in litigation consulting, profit improvement, bankruptcy and reorganization work. She holds a BA from Smith College and an MBA from the Stern School at NYU.

Kip Wolin, Practice Lead, Marketing Optimziation and Campaign Management

Kip Wolin brings extensive expertise in the application of campaign management, personalization, and marketing analytics to direct marketing initiatives. He was a senior consultant for Wheelhouse Corporation and has led client engagements at Wells Fargo Bank, Fidelity Investments, American Express, EMC, Walt Disney, Mazda, T-Mobile, and Hearst Corporation. Kip has led Unica and Epiphany implementations for multiple Fortune 1000 firms. He holds a BA from U. California Santa Cruz.

Innovation Center

Michael Winston

Michael Winston leads NewVantage Partners newly established innovation center, focused on new community based initiatives such as collaborative consumption. Michael is a graduate of Northeastern University School of Business, where he was on the executive board of the Entrepreneurs Club and was honored as a “100 Most Influential Senior”. He recently launched The Greener Boston Initiative.
